Maria Colonescu

Maria is an internationally produced, award-winning playwright, director, actor, and everything in between. Her practice leans into immersive, non-traditional, site-responsive theatre that puts the audience in a position to influence the experience, highlighting personal and social accountability and community building.

Maria holds a BA in Drama and Creative Writing from the University of Greenwich and an MFA in Advanced Theatre Practice from the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama.

She is Co-founder and Co-Artistic Director of the Treading Theatre Project, former vice-president of the Alberta Playwrights’ Network, and Director’s Lab North alumna.

Although life and work have taken Maria through several countries across two continents, strong roots keep her grounded. Born and raised in Brașov, Romania, this solid cultural core influences many aspects of her practice.
